The Universal Drive to Make a Difference - From "World" to "Our Worlds" 🏡

In the vast expanse of our world, each of us carries a universal desire—a yearning to make a difference. But what does "world" really mean? For most of us, the notion of impacting the entire planet may seem daunting, if not impossible. 🌍

However, there's a beautiful truth we often overlook—we can make a significant difference in 'our worlds,' the communities, neighborhoods, and spheres of influence we call home. 🏡

The Universal Desire to Make a Difference
Recent studies and surveys shed light on this universal desire:

  • A 2022 study by the Pew Research Center discovered that 72% of Americans consider it important to make a difference in the world.
  • In 2021, the Edelman Trust Barometer found that 70% of global citizens believe that businesses must do more to address social and environmental challenges.
  • The 2020 Cone Communications CSR Study revealed that 87% of millennials are willing to invest more in products and services from socially and environmentally responsible companies.
  • According to the 2019 Deloitte Millennial Survey, 62% of millennials aim to create a positive impact on the world through their work.
  • In 2018, the World Economic Forum reported that 75% of global citizens believe that businesses should contribute to society beyond profit.

These findings underline a fundamental truth—wanting to make a difference transcends age, background, and location. It's a shared desire, deep within our collective human spirit. 🪔

The Roots of Our Universal Drive
Why do we share this urge to make a difference? Making our world better is how we have evolved and survived.

These aspects of our humanity have evolved over time. Cooperation and mutual support have been crucial for our survival and success throughout history. Our ability to empathize and care for others has enabled us to build societies and thrive together.

The desire to leave a mark, to be significant, is deeply ingrained in our psyche. 🧠  Even our DNA. 🧬

Our Modern World and the Universal Drive
In today's digital age, we can find ourselves physically isolated (even in a crowded room... and it is at crisis levels around the globe now), yet deeply connected through the digital world. It's essential to tap into our primal needs, emotions, and universal drives to bridge the gap between our biological and emotional imperatives, and the realities of the modern world so we don't lose touch with our needs and ability to fulfill them. 🌍

Research supports the notion that our drive to make a difference is deeply rooted in our nature:

  • A 2022 study by the University of Zurich reveals that altruism and cooperation lead to positive emotions like happiness and contentment.
  • The University of California, Berkeley, found in 2021 that those who feel they are making a difference have a stronger sense of purpose and meaning in life.
  • A 2020 study from the University of Pennsylvania demonstrates that generosity and helpfulness correlate with strong social relationships and longer, healthier lives.

Notably, wanting to make a difference isn't just beneficial for society; it enhances our own well-being. Which is a good thing, because we need 'world' changers. 😀

Empowering Change thru Our Hybrid World
To fulfill our universal drive, we can harness the tools of our hybrid world, blending our digital and physical worlds. Through creating, music, art, caring for others (online and IRL), learning, teaching, etc... we can uncover our unique gifts and understand how we fit into the tapestry of our blended worlds. We are, at our core, creatures of belonging, and it's through our connections and contributions that we become everyday leaders that make an impact. 🌟🌎

Let's keep the conversation alive.

How do you feel about making a difference in 'our worlds'? What are your unique gifts, and how do they fit into your community? Share your thoughts and experiences as we continue to explore the universal drive that unites us all. 🔗
