Here are the top ten reasons why I love emoji. These little digital pics are fast becoming an integral part of my life and work, and I can't help but marvel at the multitude of ways they enrich communication and creativity. And lately, for me, they are inspiring me so deeply.
Without further ado, my ten reasons:
1. Universal Language - Emoji transcend borders and linguistic barriers. They speak to the heart of human expression, allowing us to convey emotions, ideas, and concepts with just a single tap or click. In our interconnected hybrid world, this universal language brings us all a little closer when we share them.
2. Bridging Communication Gaps - I've always been passionate about improving communication, both online and offline - IRL. Emoji are a bridge over communication gaps that can arise in the digital age, and IRL, I've come to believe. They add depth and nuance to our words, making it easier for us to connect and understand one another. Especially because they are recognized by literally most people in the world - from the very young child to the elderly, across borders and backgrounds.
3. The Art of Emoji - Emoji aren't just characters; they're these tiny lil' masterpieces. I've found joy in creating emoji pop art, combining these expressive symbols to craft visual stories. Especially when mixed with other powerful universal expressions like music and rituals. It's like painting with a palette of emotions, a form of art that transcends spoken language and resonates with people from all walks of life.
4. The Power of Storytelling with Emoji - Imagine telling a story with emoji—each symbol becomes a brushstroke in the canvas of narrative. Emoji can deepen the power of storytelling, adding layers of emotion and context to our tales. It's a fascinating way to convey intricate narratives and evoke emotions in readers/recipients of the emoji message.
5. Tech Enthusiast - With a background in tech and communications, I've always been drawn to innovative solutions that enhance our lives. Emoji, in their simplicity and effectiveness, represent the a fusion of tech and human expression. I don't think we have even fully begun to recognize the power they hold to solve communications challenges.
6. Connecting People - At the core of my work and interests lies a deep love for connecting people. Emoji help break down the barriers that hinder effective communication, allowing us to connect on a more personal and emotional level, whether it's with colleagues, friends, or strangers.
7. Bridging Generations - Emoji are a testament to the digital transformation that has shaped our world. They effortlessly bridge generational gaps, enabling the young and not-so-young to communicate with ease. It's a reminder that tech as a bonding quality. Emoji are a common language across the generations - even with the clever and creative emoji slang that younger generations come up with!
8. Embracing Diversity - Just as I've championed the importance of universal languages, emoji embrace the rich tapestry of human diversity. They reflect various cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, reminding us that our differences are something to celebrate and share. In Adobe's Trend Survey, people wanted to see more diversity in emoji.
9. The Power of Expression - Emoji empower us to express our feelings and thoughts in a world that sometimes struggles with emotional depth. They help is share emotions and stories in a communal way that can foster postive emotional and mental health.
10. Making the Digital World Feel Like Home - Emoji provide a sense of familiarity and warmth. They make the online world feel a bit more like home, a place where we can truly be ourselves and connect with others authentically. In fact, they've started to become more of a hybrid language as they've come out IRL in actions such as heart hands, exploding head, crying face, and other ways that people express "emoji-isms" in their speech patterns.
