Empowering the Future - Girls Who Code 👩‍💻

Today I want to share a cool org called Girls Who Code. They have an important mission - to build "the world's largest pipeline of future female engineers." 👩‍💻

Pretty awesome! 💥

All Girls Are Valued
Girls Who Code has a cool mission, and they have an open and big picture vision of how to get there. 👀

I'm inspired by their commitment to breaking down historical and institutional barriers, especially racial bias and discrimination, that have contributed to the widening gender gap in computer science. Girls Who Code values diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential to its mission. And it's not just talking points. 🗣️

They focus on empowering not only young women but also those who have been historically underrepresented in computer science. This includes girls who come from underrepresented minority groups, those from low-income backgrounds, and those who have had limited exposure or access to computer science. Girls Who Code acknowledges and embraces the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender identity, class, sexual orientation, ability, age, national origin, and religious/spiritual identities. 🌈

What truly resonates with me is that Girls Who Code welcomes anyone who identifies as female, regardless of their assignment at birth. Their programs are open to people who identify as non-binary or gender nonconforming and seek a female-identified environment. This inclusivity aligns perfectly with the culture of emoji, which strives to represent all people. This is shown time and time again by Unicode Consortium, the emoji standards body that manages, maintains, and adds new and more diverse sets emoji every year. (The Unicode Consortium is a very inclusive organization that is committed to making the Unicode Standard as representative of the world as possible.) 😎

Why It Matters
The gender gap in computing is alarming - frankly, it sucks! Back in 1995, 37% of computer scientists were women. Today, that number has plummeted to only 24%. This decline is most significant between the ages of 13 and 17. 📉

But here's the great news: Girls Who Code is focused on changing the game. They're reaching girls worldwide and are on track to close the gender gap in new entry-level tech jobs by 2030. 📅

If you're looking for a worthy organization to support, I wholeheartedly recommend Girls Who Code. Your support can make a significant impact. Here is a list of ways you can support this much needed work. 🤝

WAYS TO SUPPORT

  1. Give to Girls Who Code - Donating to Girls Who Code is a fantastic way to bring more girls, young women, and non-binary individuals into the world of computer science. Your contribution will support students throughout their computer science journey and help grow this incredible movement. 💵

  2. Donate Cryptocurrency - Girls Who Code accepts cryptocurrency donations, making it easy for tech enthusiasts to contribute in a tech-savvy way. 🪙
