Don't Like Something? STFU and Go Make Change!

My entire life I have lived by the premise of building, making, shaping or finding what I didn't have. And because I was born into poverty and ignorance, I didn't have much. My most powerful resource has been being resourceful and never giving up. Problem solving.

I learned this primarily through reading, public education and watch leaders/role models. And most important of all -  having a lot of grit and gumption that made me never, ever ever give up. But this post is not about that. This post is about what to do if you see something you don't like... this is what to do about it.

STFU - and make it better. The world is not made better by complaining and people not willing to make a difference.

A fundamental beauty in human nature is people's desire to contribute and make the world a little better. We want to do better by our children, our communities and to improve our own stars. It is a universal theme that comes up with people over and over - the whole world over, general after generation, regardless of geography, age, gender. It is in our stories, our daily lives, our music, and although I can't explain it properly - I know its coded into our DNA.

And yet, so often, when given the opportunity to make things better, we do not.

We complain or point out the flaws in other people's work. And we somehow miss the irony that at least they are putting out work and all we are doing is complaining. Or worse, we criticize and heap guilt upon ourselves for all the grandiose things we aren't doing. Stop! You don't need to fix the world! Just don't be part of the problem!

Or we complain about the things that people are not doing. But that's not our business either. The only business that is our business, is us. And perhaps for a very, very short time early parenthood and making sure our children's emotional, physical, and basic educational needs are met. But then, we need to let go and let them choose their lives. Not try to make little automaton robots. but instead, lead by example.

Next time you hear yourself start to complain about how much you don't like the design of something or how you improve it or how you would recommend something better or do it better. Please think about working on an actual solution or contributing in some way.

Create something. Build something. Innovation something. Join a new group. Take a class if you need to learn the skill. Find a hobby or a new purpose. Lead something or just add your participation to another cause (big or small). It is all worthy! Move a solution forward.

The world really needs people to make it better a bit at a time. We need you and your creative energy. So bring it!

Yours in creativity,

Char sig
